Another letter to The Argus (see 9th June) to correct another deliberate misrepresentation of the facts by the Labour MP for Hove, this time about government cuts
Dear
Sirs, Facts
About Government Cuts For
the second time in as many weeks our Labour MP for Hove is misrepresenting
the facts and the record needs to be set straight once again. I refer to your story “MP angry at cut in service” (Argus June 10), regarding benefit help and advice at Hove Town Hall. It is a sad and shameful fact that the Labour Government has consistently year on year squeezed local council funding and in this case, Gordon Brown has specifically cut the grant for the services referred to by Ms Barlow!!!! And not only is the requirement for Council to review spending a direct result of reduced Central Government grants (transferring funds to northern constituencies) the council actually do continue to provide benefit information on their website and for those who do not have a PC at home, free internet access and assistance is available at Hove library. In
addition Priory House in Bartholomew Square is open for people across the
city for benefit queries. A
further option is of course by telephone 01273 291291.
So far from this service being cut (despite Central Government’s
best endeavours), the Conservative administration has ensured continued
access to information whilst balancing government grant shortfalls.
In
my view our local MP’s energy would be better placed in carrying out a
positive service to her constituents by lobbying the Labour government to
fund adequately essential services in a city – a government who do seem
to be able to magic up £2.7 billion to bail them out of a the 10p tax
fiasco but can find nothing to help southern Councils. Celia Barlow and
her Labour colleagues have no new ideas and they seem to be eking out the
remaining time to the next general election by inaccurate and misleading
snipping. Hardly a dignified use of time for an elected representative. Yours
sincerely
