Mike & Simon Pedal Their Hearts Out!

This year, amongst the 27,000 other riders taking part in the London to Brighton bike ride, sponsored by the British Heart Foundation, there will be what some people may describe as “surprising” participants.  Conservative Parliamentary Candidates, Mike Weatherley, Hove & Portslade and Simon Kirby, Brighton Kemptown, will be taking part for the first time.

Mike said of the ride:  “It all started when I met with city planners who were passionate about adding cycle lanes and I felt I needed to have a more ‘hands on’ perspective of what it was like to be a cyclist in the city. That (combined with my doctor’s advice that I wasn’t getting enough exercise!) persuaded me to buy a bicycle and use it to go to meetings around the constituency whenever I could. Simon and I then thought we should have a goal to motivate us to use the bikes more so we signed up to do the London to Brighton ride – raising money for a good charity in the process.

Simon adds:  “Gradually we are getting round just about all the cycle lanes in the city and it certainly has helped to see what works and what doesn’t. There are times when it is just not practical to use a bike, but  Mike and I try to use the bikes whenever possible – hopefully we will be fit and competent enough to complete the 58 mile ride on 21st June.’
