May 1st 2008: Labours’ Election Meltdown!

A diary of the day by Mike Weatherley

Rising at 6am, my first stop of the day was to:

Crawley and the Langley Green Ward to do some ‘telling’, followed by delivering leaflets in Three Bridges Ward and a stop off at Southgate Ward. Crawley gained 4 new seats and now has 26 compared to Labour's 9 and Lib Dems 2. When I got elected in 2005 in Crawley we narrowly took control by a majority of just 1 after 35 years of Labour administration -  a wonderful turn around and congratulations to Bob Lanzer and his very hard working team.

Then off to London and, more specifically, Bromley to campaign with Bob Neill MP to get Boris and local London Assembly candidate James Cleverly elected, knocking up as many houses as we could before the heavens opened and the thunder storms forced us back inside.  The result was a win for Boris Johnson as London Mayor and a 75,237 majority for James – the highest of any London Ward.

And then to round off the day, a spell of knocking up to get voters out in Worthing, in Gaisford Ward. Delighted to report a 75 vote win for Conservative Ann Barrow (Conservatives 1026, Lib Dems 951, Labour 137).

Back home at 10pm as none of the results were being declared that night so had to wait until the next day to hear the good news!
