Busy Junction - time to consider the alternatives!

Many of you will know – and use - Olive Road as the short cut between the Old Shoreham Road and Portland Road. It is increasingly becoming a very busy road, never designed to be a major route and one of Hove’s busiest ‘non-regulated’ junctions. It is also the point many school children use to cross the Old Shoreham Road to go to school each day. It is also a junction joining a stretch of road with the higher 40mph speed limit, despite being a largely residential area.

On Saturday 19th January 2008 I visited the junction with local resident David Patrick and Hangleton Councillor Dawn Barnett. In the first 10 minutes you can see very quickly the volume of traffic, the number of motorists speeding and how close many come to having an accident. I very much support Mr Patrick and Cllr Barnett in calling for residents’ views and a petition for a review of the options for this junction.

I am on record as criticising many traffic lights around the city and I would like to see less obstacles on our roads to generally improve traffic flow. However, here is one example where just maybe additional speed cameras / traffic lights / a roundabout / lower speed limits may be a good thing. Only a proper analysis will bring out what is needed here.
