Dear
Sirs, Following
the news that a major retailer was possibly planning to ‘set up shop’
in Portland Road, I wanted to know what local residents thought about a
supermarket being built on their doorstep, and delivered a survey to most
of the households in the area. We
had hundreds of replies – a huge response for a local issue like this.
68% were against the proposal. And
81% were concerned about the possible impact of the proposed store on
local independent retailers. 74% are apprehensive as to whether there will
be sufficient parking facilities. These results have been passed on to the
local Councillors. Conservatives
believe diversity is good for local communities and there is a balance to
be struck between easy convenience and long term sustainable communities.
Both have their place and we ignore the benefits of a varied retail
community at our peril. Yours
sincerely
